After a few weeks in the Heart of Texas with family, we flew to California on April 28, and spent some fun days with Sabrina. We went to a surprise birthday party and attended a play, all involving the members of her Bible study small group. Good times and fun friends!
Sabrina and another friend Roberto joined us for the weekend and the banquet, and we spent Sunday geocaching and hiking the island, holding out as long as possible until the final ferry was ready to carry us home to LA. Thanks to the LA Area Branches for a tremendous party!
Of course, the best part was spending time with our Daughter Sabrina! There's a lovely old uphill trolley, or funnicular, in downtown LA, the "Angel's Flight", that had been closed for many years, but which has recently been rejuvenated. For a quarter you get a welcome ride up/down the rather steep "Bunker Hill". Nice!
On Friday the 30th we went by catamaran ferry to Santa Catalina island, about 20 miles from the LA coastline. What a gorgeous place! Fairy-tale like! Once every 3 years the LA area branches of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society host a dance weekend on the island and this was the weekend! We stayed at a lovely resort, shared meals and good times with friends like Jeff and Robin, and danced in classes on Saturday and Sunday. It all culminated in our banquet and grand Scottish Ball at the Casino: home of the most perfect round ballroom and dance floor. (The "casino" was never a gambling establishment. The name is from an old Italian usage for friendly gathering house.) The theme of the weekend was "the flapper era". We gathered in our kilts and Roaring 20's period dresses at the fountain in the square of the main town of Avalon, and walked the 20 minute promenade to the Casino, led by a drummer and bagpiper. Quite a parade! After a marvelous meal we danced the evening away to the music of Fiddlesticks and Ivory. (Click this link if you're interested in seeing some of the activity on the local news recording of the event.)
