Back to Halifax

On Tuesday the 24th of July we headed back south toward the Nova Scotia mainland. We stopped for the night in Port Hawkesbury, just on the Cape Breton side of the causeway, where we had another quiet and restful sleep, courtesy of Wal-Mart. But before that we did a little wandering in the town, searching for a geocache or two. One was in this little cemetery near the water. From there we spotted what appeared to be the local 9-hole golf course: That night we attended the weekly ceilidh, a two-hour show of local musicians, pipers and step dancers. Great fun!
This is Kimberley Fraser, an up-and-coming young Cape Breton fiddler. Click on her name for a sample of her music; you wouldn't regret getting her album.

We moved on the next day to begin our four-day International School of Scottish Country Dancing, the event that sparked this entire trip almost two years ago. It was held on the beautiful campus of King's College and Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Eleven us were from Texas: seven from Austin in addition to the Bruces and Simms. Here we are with Bill and Rosemary Galloway from the Austin dancers. It was a wonderful time of fun, learning, practicing, topped with dancing each evening. One of the day side-trips was a Harbour Tour aboard a stern paddlewheeler.
The Halifax harbour is second in size in the world only to that of Sydney, Australia, and second busiest to New York harbor.
The week's dancing and fellowship was capped off by a ball on Saturday night. But before that we had to have one more lobster!
It was a terrific week that lived up to our expectations in every way. One part of us wanted it to go on forever; the other, more sensible side, knew our feet needed to recover!
